Maintaining Confidentiality
There is no doubt that confidentiality is one of the major guarantees of success for pre-marital medical screening. Among the top priority concerns of the Pre-marital Medical Examination Committee is preserving confidentiality to protect the rights of all the concerned parties. This is because the first thing that occurs to the mind of those intending to get married is the approach adopted for safeguarding the confidentiality of the information included in the medical examination reports, as such information is very personal and nobody else is entitled to have access to. Hence, the Committee has been keen, in all its procedures, to ensure and observe confidentiality.
Non disclosure of the medical secrets that come to the knowledge of physicians and paramedical staff, such as nurses, lab technicians and others, is among the commitments that such categories should strictly abide by.
Organizing the various aspects of life, Islam has given due concern to observing people’s confidential and private issues, whether they relate to the State or individuals. Moslems are ordained to keep secrets. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Resort to secrecy in accomplishing your own missions as he who lives in comfort is always envied”.
Among the obligations ordained by Islam is the non-disclosure of the patients’ secrets. In this respect, the Holy Qura’n says: “Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat (all the duties which Allah has ordained, honesty, moral responsibility and trusts etc.) and to their covenants” (Surat: 23 Al-Muminoon–8)
